There are endless ways in which you can give a new life to your old sarees and get beautiful dresses made from old sarees. We all have a wardrobe full of old sarees about which we often hear our mothers complaining.
We always feel sorry for how much we have spent on them, but they are of no use now. Either those old sarees are no longer in fashion, or the borders are damaged, or we don’t want to repeat them.
Don’t worry ladies; we Indians never fail to find the ways to reuse old things. Be it a silk saree, cotton saree, crepe saree or saree of any other material; you can always use them in one or the other way. Follow the latest fashion trends and get trendy dresses made from old sarees.
I believe in helping my Fashionistas by providing an insight of my personal experiences, and hence in this post, I am going to feature outfits from my wardrobe and my mother’s wardrobe designed from old sarees.
These dresses made from old sarees are my favorites :
In the above picture is my most loved lehenga. The same is made from my mother’s engagement saree.
I always used to admire the work on the saree and decided to make an outfit out of it. It was then that the idea of lehenga stuck in my mind. I remember draping the saree and exploring various designing options.
I found it best suited to the fish cut design and my designer – Women’s Pride, The Dream Closet made a beautiful piece out of the saree. They reshaped it precisely in the same manner as was in my mind.
Exploring is learning, and the best way you’ll be able to get an idea of the outfit you want to create from the old sarees is exploring options. Do it, and you’ll love the result.
2. Kurta & Skirt
This is my mom’s outfit from another beautiful saree. Kurta and skirt is the safest option when you plan to get dresses made from old sarees.
You can always mix and match two or more old sarees for this outfit. Here we paired the outfit with a Banarasi dupatta to give it a classy touch. You can also use a piece of your old sarees as a dupatta. Women’s Pride, The Dream Closet designed this attire.
3. A long dress or Full-length Suit
Anarkali or long dress is another famous example of dresses made from old sarees. The one above is from my closet. We designed it from a plain royal blue silk saree.
One can wear it as a long dress or as a long Anarkali suit. For one of the occasions, I wore it as a suit and paired it with a phulkari dupatta.
You can always opt for customization of old sarees by adding borders or embroidery or pairing it with various accessories as in the below picture which is from my mother’s suit collection.
We used Kanjeevaram saree for this outfit. The embroidery work and brocade border are added to recreate the look of the saree.
You can get your dresses made from old sarees in endless innovative ways. Ridhansh Fashion Studio designed both the outfits.
4. Long kurta with Palazzo Pants
This beautiful dress made from old saree is designed by Ridhansh Fashion Studio. A simple yet classy outfit is perfect for small events. We added a green touch to the outfit to customize the look. It further changes the entire look of the outfit.
You do not always need to spend extra bucks for customization and additions; you can still go for small additions to differentiate the look like you can use the border of another tattered saree.
There’s a lot more in your wardrobe than you can imagine and you can always mix and match to create original outfits. For now, this is it from my collection of dresses made from old sarees. I’ll be working on more costumes soon. But the list of outfits you can make from old sarees is not yet complete.
Some more ideas of dresses made from old sarees:
Another example of dresses made from old sarees is skirts. They look wonderful. You can pair the skirt with a shirt or a crop top or short kurta. In fact, a skirt is one of the most comfortable attire to create from a saree. Pick any saree you love and transform it into a skirt.
Designer Pencil Pants or Leggings
We can also stitch a pencil pant or a designer legging from the old sarees. You can wear them with suits, tops, and shirts. The choice in case of legging or pant has to be wise as not all prints may look good as bottom wear.
Long or Short Shrugs
You can also use your old sarees to make long or short shrugs or jackets which you can wear with a suit or a crop top or a lehenga and add a new style to your outfit. If you have an old saree that matches with any of your outfits, don’t waste it.
